#EmbraceEquity this Women’s Day

The theme for this year’s International Women’s Day is “embracing equity”.

As employers we aim to create an “equal” workplace which means that everyone is treated the same. This is “equality”. However, we don’t often realise that equality is what we strive towards, but “equity” is what gets us there. “Equity” acknowledges that not everyone comes from the same starting point on the road to equality. This means that the access to, and distribution of our resources, should focus on those with a higher need.

This Women’s Day our focus should be on equity, and not just equality. We have a responsibility to develop, nurture and motivate the women in our organisations who need it the most to reach their full potential. And it cant just be women leading the charge for equality and equity. Everyone has a role to play – we should all #EmbraceEquity.
